    Catalina

We’re back from our class trip! It was fun, relaxing, educational, and most importantly…safe. We hiked, dissected squid, snorkeled, kayaked, hiked, and went tide pooling. I know I’m blessed as a teacher to have an opportunity to take my students on a trip like this.

There are also a few amusing quotes I’ll be sharing later on. Hope your teacher appreciation week is going well out there!

Boy 1:  What are you guys doing?
Boy 2: Being geniuses.
Allowing kids to take the assigned science experiment so much further just by giving them the option and the time…one of my favorite things about teaching.

    STDs

We’re just finishing up on our sex education unit. Here’s a question I asked them to write about and a few responses…

What did you learn about sexually transmitted diseases in this lesson?

“I learned that STDs are extremely important and you should do your best trying not to get one.”

“I learned that it is good to be abstinence. I learned you can die from HIVs. The final thing is that Genital herpes are for guys and girls.”

“I should stay away from STDs.”

“I learned that you can’t really trust anybody. Even your spouse can be infected.”

“That sex is a harmful thing.”

Edit: Just so we all know… YES. I did clarify with the student that sex is not harmful. Obviously as a teacher I wouldn’t let that slip by without talking to the student(s).

    Abstinence

The students are making brochures on abstinence…

“Hey, Miss At, what color is abstinence so I can use it on my brochure? I mean, is it a medicine you take that’s a certain color?”

Some students can be in your class, but yet aren’t REALLY in your class.

    Sex Education

It’s that lovely time of the year where we are learning about the birds and the bees in science. The students were given a pop quiz on their reading from yesterday, and the first question asked, “What does it mean to be a virgin?” Here are some responses…

“That you have not done sex.”

    “Not married.”

“To not have intercourse if you are old.”

“Means to go around and help others with their problems.”

    Antennae

Me: How would life be different if humans had antennae?

Student: Well dating would become a WHOLE lot easier!

P.S. We’re studying arthropods in science, and their antennae are used to do many things such as find food and….mates.
